Northwest Wisconsin Regional Food Summit – next Thursday and Friday, March 24-25 at UW-Barron County in Rice Lake, WI

On Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25, the Northwest Wisconsin Regional Food Summit will create a space for celebrating and connecting local food initiatives led by farmers and other community members, institutions, businesses, and organizations. Anyone with an interest in developing a more just, sustainable food system in the region is encouraged to attend the Summit, which will be held at the UW – Barron County campus in Rice Lake in Ritzinger Hall.

The theme of the event is “Building Community Food Connections,” and nationally recognized keynote speakers Ken Meter of the Crossroads Resource Center and Mark Winne of the Community Food Security Coalition will share their advice and experience with participants on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Their presentations will complement workshops and panel discussions led by local leaders from throughout the region.

Thursday’s schedule begins at 12:30 pm and includes a training on sourcing local foods designed specifically for institutional food service directors and their allies as well as a workshop on organizing for food justice for regional community members. A dinner featuring local foods will begin at 5:00 pm followed by Ken Meter’s “Finding Food in Farm Country” presentation on the regional food economy. A mini film festival beginning at 8:00 pm will close the evening.

Friday’s events run from 8:30 – 4:30 and include six different sessions highlighting local efforts in the areas of “Building Direct Connections,” “Connecting Farms & Businesses/Institutions,” and “Connecting through Community Partnerships.” Mark Winne will deliver his keynote presentation after a local foods lunch starting at 11:30. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) will hold a concurrent food safety workshop for producers on Friday as well.

Registration fees are $25 for Thursday only (including dinner) and $35 for Friday (including breakfast and lunch), or $50 for the whole Summit. Nourish Fundraiser

Good Morning Everyone,

If you could, please pass the word to your various circles (ie. list serves, facebook, word of mouth, etc).

The Sheboygan Visual Artists are having their monthly Final Friday art exhibit on March 25th from 6-10p, and have graciously made the event into a fundraiser for NOURISH. Pottery, jewely, paintings and an assortment of various other art will be for sale. This month’s theme is “All Things Botanical.” Their website has more information. http://www.sheboyganvisualartists.com/. NOURISH will have a table set up with our information, as well as a short presentation to share what we do. Volunteer opportunity

Judy Tauschek, Farmers Market Manager for SCIO, said she would like to let everyone know that volunteers to help with the Summer markets would be very helpful to her. The volunteeers would help her with education, to answer questions, identify vegetables and how to prepare them, distribute recipes and maybe talk about what’s in season when. For volunteeers this would not have to be an every week thing but when they could fit it into their schedule on a Wednesday or Saturday, and volunteers would probably only be needed during peak hours, maybe from 9AM to Noon. SALFA Meeting

The next Salfa meeting is scheduled for Monday evening, March 7, at 6 PM at the Weather Center Cafe. Please be present if you wish this organization to continue. If you can’t attend but wish to contribute, please reply to the Salfa website.

After months and months of no more than 5-6 participants at meetings, and sometimes less, several of us have expressed the opinion that we no longer care to attend either. It may be time to let Salfa dissolve, to devote ourselves individually to local food issues we care about, whether the farmer’s market or Goodside Grocery or whatever. Perhaps when the time is right another organization will rise to take its place. We have about $100 or so in our treasury and have talked about donating it to Fred Depies to continue his good work with the Farm Fresh Atlas.

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is currently accepting applications for partner-sites to host members for the AmeriCorps Farm to School program. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2011.

The AmeriCorps Farm to School program provides an innovative approach to decreasing childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating habits in students K-12 and increasing access to local foods in schools. DATCP manages the program, providing support, technical assistance, and training. AmeriCorps Farm to School has worked with 10 host sites, placed 20 service members throughout the state, and has served over 10,000 Wisconsin students.

A partner-site may be a school, school district, group of schools or districts, non-profit organization, state agency, or university. Partner-sites must specifically outline the school(s) that they will serve and have a letter of support from those schools. In anticipation of receiving funding, new partner-sites would begin on August 15, 2011.

As a partner-site, recipients will receive a minimum of two half-time AmeriCorps members. One member is a community outreach member, serving as a liaison between the schools and the community. The second member is a nutrition education expert, building relationships with teachers and administrators.

Partner-sites must meet the following requirements to be considered:

• Assist with the recruitment and hiring of AmeriCorps members

• Identify an onsite supervisor

• Provide orientation, workspace, and office supplies

• Assist to form a local Farm to School Task Force

• Contribute $5,000 per full-time member and $1,750 per half-time member as a cash match for the estimated $600,000 annual program cost.

• Obtain evaluation forms from students, teachers, and staff including a record of pre and post student knowledge

Priority will be given to sites that outline other non-cash grant matches; provide room and/or board for members; show strong partnerships with school, community, and agriculture members; demonstrate strong supervisor dedication; and offer strong needs documentation.

If you intend to apply, DATCP highly encourages interested applicants to complete a Notice of Intent to Apply by Friday, March 18, 2011. The Notice of Intent to Apply, a one-page form, is not mandatory, but assists DATCP in planning for interested parties.

Grower Program Manager, Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture Coalition

The Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture Coalition, a nationally recognized non-profit organization based in Madison, Wisconsin, seeks an organized, dedicated individual with excellent communication skills and experience with diversified vegetable production and direct market farming to be our Grower Program Manager (GPM). The GPM will work with the farm community to enhance grower training opportunities, to improve resource sharing and collaborative activities among farmers, and to continue to strengthen the network and resources available to CSA farmers in our region. Some weekend and evening hours required for meetings and events.

o Program Management

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:

Minimum 2 years professional work experience

Excellent organizational communication skills

Experience in and/or knowledge of Community Supported Agriculture

Experience in community organizing and/or group facilitation

Familiarity with vegetable producers and/or hands-on experience with diversified vegetable production and direct market, organic agriculture

Above average competency in computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, web, email)

Ability to work independently to set priorities, generate ideas, and facilitate programs

This position will be a 75% time, salaried position (30 hrs/week) with a starting annual salary range of $21,000-$24,000, commensurate with experience.

Compensation includes health stipend, paid vacation, holiday and personal time.

Sustainable Living Group

Brian Schwaller of the Sustainable Living Group attended our meeting last night and told us about their group and their desire to network with other local groups to encourage the communiity to look to itself for answers to sustainability. We have so much to offer right here in Sheboygan county, but outside of our own area of interest we may not know who else, or what else is right here with us, such as local solar and geothermal businesses, LEEDS-certified architects, CFL recyclers, local food providers, restaurants committed to sourcing local food…You get the idea. The Sustainable Living Group has their monthly meeting the first Tuesday of every month, which means their next meeting is tonight at the Mill Street Grill at 506 East Mill St. in Plymouth from 6:30-7:30. Everyone is welcome. Take a look at their website for information on their Thinking Green Thursdays for the list of presenters!
